Rabat, Morocco is set to welcome hundreds of delegates from around the world to the 87th AIPS Congress from 13-17 May, marking the event’s significant return to the African continent after 20 years. It will be the second time that Morocco and Africa will be hosting the most important gathering of sports journalists in the world after the 2005 elective congress in Marrakech proved to be a major turning point in the history of this 100-year-old association.

The Moroccan Sports Press Association (AMPS) is hosting this year’s congress under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. Fairmont La Marina Rabat Sale Hotel will provide a brilliant atmosphere for intense meetings, discussions and debates on issues concerning sports and sports journalism, while the much-anticipated AIPS Sport Media Awards 2024 ceremony will take place on 13 May at Palais Jawhara.

PROGRAMME For four days, Rabat will be the hub of international sports journalism, promoting intercultural dialogue and collaboration. There will be discussions about artificial intelligence, content creators, investigative journalism, illegal betting, women in sports journalism and other important topics as delegates try to find solutions to the major challenges facing sports journalism in a rapidly changing world. Representatives of the IOC, FIFA, UEFA, IJF, Special Olympics, FISU, Centro Caribe Sports, the Moroccan Football Federation, etc, will deliver insightful presentations on their upcoming events and activities. And as usual, the Congress will feature meetings of the AIPS Executive Committee and continental sections.

AIPS President Gianni Merlo said: “In this congress we will speak about the most important matters affecting sports journalists now. And also some issues plaguing sports, like illegal betting, which is a big problem at the moment. This is why investigative journalism will always be vital because we have to save the future of sports. We have to save the principles of sport.”

STRONG SUPPORT The Moroccan authorities are committed to offering the best possible conditions to guarantee the success of this international meeting. The AMPS - spearheaded by its president Badreddine Drissi and AIPS EC member Morad Moutaouakkil - has been pulling out all the stops, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), and several national institutions. “This event will mark a significant moment in the history of sports journalism in Morocco and around the world,” the AMPS says in a statement. In December 2024, Morocco was confirmed as one of the hosts for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
