It’s with a heavy heart that sportspress.lu announces the passing of our highly respected honorary president, Petz Lahure. He bravely battled a severe illness in the past months and passed away on Wednesday (July 9) at the age of 79.
Petz was a monumental figure in both national and international sports journalism. A dedicated association president, known far beyond Luxembourg’s borders for his commitment to the world of sports.
From the beginning of his career on March 15, 1965 at Tageblatt, he acquired an exceptional level of expertise that is rare to find in this world. Between 1988 and 2002, he was responsible for the sports coverage at Revue, before returning to Tageblatt as a freelance journalist, reporting from major cycling races and football matches.
Last summer, Petz Lahure was honored in Paris by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) for his 15th participation in the Olympic Games. He loved spending his summers at the Tour de France (La Grande Boucle), which he covered 46 times as a journalist. He was present at countless matches of the “Red Lions”, the Luxembourg National Football Team.
As former president of www.sportspress.luwww.sportspress.lu he was active on many other fronts, including being a member of the AIPS Ethics Commission.
For 27 years, he was president of sportspress.lu. In February 2025, he chose not to run for re-election. Under his leadership, a once-divided association not only reunited but also launched an annual Sports Gala — later called the “Awards Night” — which has become one of the most important sporting events of the year in Luxembourg.
Goodbye, Petz, and thank you for everything. We will never forget you.
